A Few Foods That are Not as Good for You as You Think They Are
Every day we are fed ideas about what is good for our health and what is not. Television commercials tell us what workout videos to buy and what low calorie snacks to eat. Our parents tells us what kinds of foods we should eat more of because they’re “good for your bones” and various other things.
So what’s the truth in all of it? It can be hard to dig up, but there a few big lies out there, especially when it comes to food.
One of the biggest and most well-believed myths, floating around out there is that milk is good for your bones and your overall health. Let’s put a big red X on that idea right now.
Dairy companies would like you to believe that their precious cow milk is good for your bones because of the amount of calcium in it. And while it’s true that milk does have a good amount of calcium in it, it also has a fair amount of acid that can be found in all animal protein. The acid throws off your body’s pH balance and the calcium in your bones is what goes to neutralize is.
Unfortunately, the calcium you take in from the milk is not enough to replenish what is used trying to neutralize the acidic content from the drink.
With that knowledge it’s easy to realize that drinking a lot of milk can be quite detrimental to your bones, and is the reason why countries with high dairy consumption also have a higher rate of osteoporosis.
On a less serious note, let’s address low-calorie snacks. You know the ones I mean; they come in little plastic bags in boxes that claim they are only 100 calories that you end up shelling out too much money for. These are things that we should stop buying right now.
Yes, they are low calorie, but that doesn’t mean they are good for you. They rarely fill you up and they don’t contain any real nutrients. It’s a filler food (that most people end up eating several of at a time anyways) that doesn’t really benefit our bodies.
If you want a good 100 calorie snack try a banana or a handful of raw nuts. Did you know a whole cup of blueberries is only about 80-85 calories? And it comes packed with vitamin C and fiber.
There are so many other options out there don’t buy into the hype of bad snack food just because it’s low in calories.
And to go with that, let’s also trash those frozen dinners. Yes, even the Lean Cuisine that claims to be a healthy quick dinner alternative.
Frozen dinners are often used by people looking to start downsizing their meal portions and lose weight. But the only way to lose weight and keep it off is to completely change your diet. Hopefully that doesn’t mean a life full of frozen dinners.
You get so many more nutrients through fresh foods that you prepare from scratch than you do anything that has been boxed and frozen for who knows how long. If you’re looking to lose weight and change your eating habits, make sure you are learning to put time aside to cook for yourself and know what is going into your meals.
Being aware of what you are consuming is one of the biggest parts of leading a healthy life. Make sure you’re educated.
