If you were born with a sweet tooth, you know how hard it is to ignore when it’s in “feed me” mode.  Problem is, if you let it, it can absolutely kill a diet.

However, there are tons of great low calorie dessert ideas that are now available, from products you can buy to ideas people are sharing online.

If you’re trying to lose weight and are worried about satiating your raging sweet tooth, here are some ideas that will please both you and your sweet tooth.

1. Whipped yogurt: Yogurt in general has been known as a great dessert alternative (frozen yogurt is a delicious replacement for ice cream,) but did you know yogurt can also be whipped? You can either do it yourself or you can buy it pre-whipped at the store.

By whipping yogurt, you get the light airy effect of whipped cream, the dairy aspect of the whipped cream, yet you leave out all the fat and extra calories.

Try adding fruit or even a small amount of cocoa powder to your yogurt before whipping it. And to properly whip it, dump the yogurt in a small bowl and use a hand mixer.

2. Homemade sorbet: Icy delicious fruity sorbets are another great low-cal desert idea.

There are dozens of homemade, low calorie sorbet recipes online that will last a long time in your freezer.  And the fun part about making them at home is that you can make it exactly how you like it so that it appeals to your personal sweet tooth.

A popular homemade sorbet to make at home is orange sorbet with roasted almonds; both healthy and absolutely delicious.

3. Baked fruit: Whatever your favorite fruit is, try baking it to see what happens.

A popular fruit to bake that it still delicious without a high calorie crust are apples.  Sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon and nutmeg on them and the juices that emit from the apples as you bake them will be simply divine.

(This treatment would also work really well on peaches and pears.)

4. Sugar free pudding:
An easy to make  product you can buy at any grocery store that does a great job of satisfying your sweet tooth is sugar-free pudding.

Chocolate, vanilla, banana or butterscotch, there are many different flavors available and they’re also surprisingly tasty despite having no sugar.

You can also make pudding parfaits using low calorie snacks like rice cakes.

5. Natural Granola bars: Full of whole grains and natural ingredients, granola bars offer great way to satisfy your sweet tooth.

You can also add dried fruit to them if you attempt to make them at home (surprisingly easy to do as well). The natural sugars in granola bars can help keep your blood sugar stable and can curb your cravings for sweets between meals.

There are loads of other dessert alternatives if you just look hard enough. You can even eat miniature versions of your favorite desserts if you have the ability to not go back for seconds (and thirds).

Just start thinking about the notion of natural sugars, and you’ll be surprised at all to dessert ideas that are out there.

Chances are you’ve heard of people eating several small meals a day. This has become a popular eating trend among celebrities trying to lose weight; and the reason they’re doing it is because it works.

Many high-profile trainers have been promoting eating several small meals a day for a few years now, and it’s definitely caught on.

The idea is that you should eat around six meals a day – breakfast, a mid-morning snack, lunch, a mid-afternoon snack, dinner and a small snack before you go to bed. Sounds like fun right?

It definitely takes a lot more planning (keep this in mind before trying it out). Here’s why it can help you lose weight.

It may help boost metabolism: While there’s some debate over whether this is true or not, most dietitians agree that eating small meals throughout the day can help the body maintain good metabolism levels (the level where calories are being consistently burned throughout the day).

Instead of eating three meals a day, and now six meals a day, the body no longer has to go into “starvation mode” where it slows down calorie burning (and facts on the weight).

You’re less hungry between meals: One of the hardest things about eating healthy is all the cravings you get. Even if you’re not on a diet, it can be hard to resist snacking between meals. Everybody does it, especially if there’s tasty foods seemingly around all of time.

But the great thing about eating six meals a day is that you know the next meal isn’t that far off. It’s easier to tell yourself, “No, I don’t need that.”

You won’t overeat at meals: A big reason a lot of people put on weight is because of overeating. They simply consume too many calories in one sitting, and the body doesn’t know to do with all of them, storing them as fat instead. Since you’ll be eating six meals, the result is that you simply won’t get hungry at all.

And remember, a helpful tip for planning your six meals a day – each meal should be approximately 1/6 your daily required calories (stock up on easily prepared foods that are good for you to make it easier).

Six meals a day may seem difficult, but if you can stick with it, your body will respond in a way you will like.

Are you grazing from one meal to the next, enjoying life absolutely but aren’t too happy with your weight? This is a common situation for a lot of people.

You hear advice all this time, people telling you to do this, change that and you’ll look like a million bucks. But what should you really do?

I’ve compiled a must have “cut-list” – 5 foods to cut from your diet.

Some of them may seem bold, but if you’re serious about losing weight, it isn’t rocket science; all it takes is a little calorie snip and cut. Check them out. Hopefully parting with them won’t bring too much sweet sorrow.

Soda and sweets drinks: This is one of the first ones you’ll hear from anybody, and it’s because it’s absolutely true.

If you’re overweight and drink soda all day long and you suddenly cut all soda from your diet, chances are you could drop 20 pounds. That’s how bad regular soda is for you.

It’s full of sugar, sodium and the worst – calories. Think of one bottle of soda as an equivalent to one desert. And diet soda isn’t a much better because it’s full of mystery chemicals, fake sugars and throws your brain into all types of havoc scientists still don’t fully understand.

Fatty meats: You probably already know that big sausages probably aren’t the best thing on a diet, but beef and pork can be high in fat as well.

Chicken is always a safe bet as long as you remove the skin and don’t drown it in fatty sauces. Lean pork chops also are good.

But except of the leanest cuts, most beef should be cut from your diet because of its high fat content.

Cheese: If you love cheese, we know how difficult of a subject this is, but most people would be shocked at the amount of saturated fat and calories in cheese.

That stuff in in shredded in bags may taste great, but adding cheese to your food can make it go from healthy to unhealthy real quick.

If you love cheese and absolutely can’t bear the thought of cutting it, try one of the low-fat or fat-free versions of your favorite cheese. It may not taste as good, but it can cut a hefty amount of calories from your diet.

Butter: This without question is one of the hardest to cut, butter, but it’s so high in fat and calories that if you really want to lose weight it has to be done. Instead of using butter, try using cooking spray or spreads like Smart Balance.

Also, have fun using more interesting things like pesto or a good quality olive oil.

White flour products: Commercial breads, pasta, baked goods, breakfast cereals; chances are if you’re craving it, it probably has white flour in it.

White flour can be the crux of a diet and very hard to cut. They’re full of simple carbohydrates, which contain no health benefits for the human body. All they give is empty calories.

What you should eat instead are whole grains; the awesome replacement for white flour products.

Aim for half of the grains you eat every day being whole grains. Whole grains provide you with fiber and good carbs. But make sure they are 100% whole grains. The whole wheat pastas and breads that you see at the store usually still have white flour mixed in.

When trying to lose weight, it’s all about cutting bad foods from your diet. Don’t forget to incorporate plenty of water as well, and after cutting these foods, replace them with all the healthy things you know you should be eating. Your target weight is closer than you think.

Calculate how many calories you need each day: A lot of people just follow the basic 2,000 calories a day requirement, but 2,000 calories a day isn’t necessarily what every person needs. Your daily calorie needs most likely are a bit lower than you’d expect. If you sit at a desk all day, eating 2,000 calories a day probably isn’t something your body needs. However, if you’re on your feet all day and active, 2,000 calories is exactly what you should be consuming (maybe even more).

To figure out the right number of calories you should eat every day, you first need to figure out how many calories you need to eat each day to maintain your current weight, and this is easy. If you’re an active woman, multiply your current weight by 12, and if you’re inactive woman multiply your weight by 10 (to your current weight). Once you find this number, subtract 500 calories. This is the amount of calories you should be eating every day to lose those last 20 pounds.

Increase your cardio: This may seem obvious, but it sure works. Upping your cardio each day will definitely help you lose those pounds. Are you a jogger, a boxer, a treadmill fan? Adding at least 30 more minutes each day, maybe even a full hour will do the trick.

Lift weights: You should also be lifting weights, if you aren’t already that is. Lifting weights helps your body burn calories and gives you increased metabolism after you’re done. And you don’t have to pump iron like a crazy person either. Keep it in the range of what you’re capable of. Consistency is key.

Whatever you do, don’t lose hope. You can lose those last 20 pounds. This is possible. All it takes is some accelerated hard work, and you will get there.
